CHOOSING THE PERFECT NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHER

Welcoming a new baby to your family would have to be one of the biggest and most beautiful times of your life. It’s also a time that goes in a blink of an eye, so capturing this fleeting time is something you will always cherish and love.

Let’s look at my top three things to consider when choosing the perfect photographer for your newborn baby in Melbourne.

EXPERIENCE & SAFE PRACTICES

Before handing over your precious tiny newborn baby you want to ensure your chosen photographer has the right experience when working with small babies and also photographs with safety first and foremost.  Take a look through their portfolio, this will give you a good indication. If the babies look safe and comfortable then that’s reassuring. Professional photographers should also have public liability insurance and safety measures in place at all times, especially if working from a studio.

My newborn sessions are all baby-led, meaning I work with your baby’s awake and sleep patterns and use their body language as a guide on posing.  Some babies prefer different positions, some love to be wrapped or dressed, others prefer to stay in mum’s arms, and some want to feed a lot – all of these are completely normal and fine.  My sessions are also without time limits, booking only one session per day. This ensures flexibility and allows as much time as needed for feeding and settling.  I am also a mum of three boys so totally understand the joys of motherhood from newborns to now teenagers!

A STYLE THAT RESONATES

Every photographer will have a different style. Just like the clothes you love to wear or the furniture you buy for your home, they will match your style and taste.  Always choose a photographer whose style you love, look at the colours they use, their lighting (natural or artificial), do they include family photos, what their studio looks like etc

My newborn and family sessions are well known to be beautiful, natural and light-filled. I always ensure that they remain timeless so that you not only love them today but in 20 years time. My studio is all natural light with white walls, timber flooring and features a mix of linen, marble and rattan.  I use beautiful wraps, blankets and knitted outfits in neutral colours from the best baby suppliers  – I find by doing this your baby becomes the main focus just as they should be. No crazy colours or props. All of my sessions also include family images such as photos with mum and dad and any siblings – capturing your love is what it’s all about.

PRICING

This one is a biggie. Just like there are different styles, you will also find when researching, a range of pricing so it can be confusing. Professional photography is an investment that only increases in value over time as your children grow.  I don’t recommend choosing someone on price alone, especially if it is down the lower end.  Choose wrongly and you may hate your photos. By the time your photographer delivers your images, your baby will already be older and it may be too late to reshoot again.

Like everything in life, you get what you pay for. Professional newborn photographers have invested many years into their training, equipment and editing style.  There is also so much that goes behind the scenes, from the client experience to post-processing to ordering your artwork and products.

This time is so fleeting and like a wedding, it’s a moment in time you will never get back again so it’s worth investing in a photographer who you love.

If you would love to have your sweet baby captured I would love to hear from you x
